Pilates is a system of exercises designed to be performed on both a mat and uniquely designed apparatus. Created by Joseph Pilates almost 100 years ago, it is a method of body conditioning with a focus on strength, flexibility and balance for the total body.  Mr. Pilates perfected his method over the course of his lifetime which was termed by him as "Contrology".  He used this term to embody the idea that when using the mind to control the movement only then can you achieve maximum physical and mental results.  After his death in 1967, his method came to be known as Pilates.  What was once originally designed for men, Joseph Pilates' method has been discovered to benefit not only dancers, performers, athletes, but people of all ages and fitness levels.
